Glass vessels are a category of work encompassing bowls and platters.
The creation of vessels is a multi-step process that includes making the glass elements that are the basis for the design of each piece. I make glass “flow bars” and “pattern bars” as well as murrini, ribbons, twists, and stringers of glass. After assembling color palettes of design materials, I create each vessel on a flat piece of glass and fire the piece flat. The next firing “slumps” or forms the flat glass into the desired shape, either in a mold or through a ring of mold material.
After the vessel emerges from the kiln it is finished with “cold work,” which involves sanding and polishing the rim. The entire process is full of surprises and challenges.
